Crafty Hands – The Heart of Craft Beats in Western Virginia!

This weekend, my husband and I took a road trip to spend the weekend in the Massenutten Mountain ridge in heart of the Shenandoah Valley, Virginia. This area is not only famous for its historic role in the civil war, but also for its beauty, farm fresh produce and friendly people. Fall is approaching fast, and as leaves begin to change, that means festivals and harvest celebrations. For me…that equals crafty country! I was disappointed not to be able to find a craft show happening on Saturday within a reasonable driving distance. But I did find the next best thing…

Dayton Farmer’s market is a local famous indoor market located in a town so small you literally miss it if you blink. (We blinked, and we missed it.) The market is a treasure of community, home to about a dozen small, family run businesses; many who have been there for decades. Once I walked in, I immediately understood the draw to this small blend of country offerings, open only on weekends. The market atmosphere is warm, and its shopkeepers are overtly friendly.
There is something for everyone here. Among the smattering of offerings are: A gourmet food shop that sells fresh local cheese and butter (think churned that morning), fresh meats (slaughtered yesterday), toys, coffee/espresso, local BBQ, fresh jerky, homemade chocolate and sweets, kitchenwares, baked goods, an art gallery, windchimes and other gifts, and much more!

But the draw for me was the several shops that featured the wares of individual craft artisans, and I was not disappointed. The shop, “Crafty Hands” has been in the Dayton Market for 17 years and is owned by Jo and her husband.

The shop is aptly named as it carries wares not only from local artisans, but also creative goodies from crafters far and wide. The atmosphere is cozy, but not cluttered. Here are some of my favorites…

Across the way, the Craftyhands in Toyland shop section beckoned my husband, and the radio controlled helicopter had his attention for most of the hour.  Just goes to show that they never really grow up.

Next, I met Cris from Cris’ Corner, a unique yarn shop with colors everywhere!  She was a little camera shy, but otherwise very friendly and welcoming.

This her biggest fan, Ramon. Cris offered to teach me how to knit, (something that I’ve just never been able to master. ), but I told her I’d never be able to sit still long enough to finish a project! (Makin jewelry is hard enough, just ask my creative soul sister, “The Impatient Beader“)

Everyone at the market and in Dayton that we chatted with was truly delightful, and we genuinely felt welcome in this small town. Just next door to Harrisonburg, Dayton has real community feel with larger city amenities close by. That evening, we did the unthinkable while on a mini-break in the country…we went to the moves!   I have to say, 3:10 to Yuma is a big thumbs up for this girl. Ooooo, Russel Crowe and Christian Bale as roughneck cowboys…mmmm, dicey!

After lunch and a beautiful hike up Massenutten on Sunday, we finally headed north home to DC.  It was good to get back, as I really missed my pooch, but I’ll definitely remember the sweet time we had and the crafty folks we met.

Even this little silk worm. See ya little fella.

CHA Day 2 Community & Donna Dewberry!

Today was simply a BLAST!! Most of the day was filled with meeting new people, and greeting friends! Their theme this year is “celebration” of craft, and tonight’s the big Summer of Love party!

Even Austin was there offering to shag me and celebrate in his “Yeah Baby” way!! Ok, maybe not literally, but he was hilarious! And fun is primarily what we found everyone having today on the floor. We saw people smiling everywhere, chatting and hugging old friends and laughing!

And that’s really what we found CHA to be all about. Sure, it’s about exposure, marketing and companies and retailers coming together…but more importantly as we discovered as an underlying current today, it’s about community and doing things that make the world more beautiful!

For example, we caught up with Donna Dewberry today at the Plaid booth, and she was just blowing me away with her “one stroke” technique and her ability to produce these beautiful paintings.

Donna is mostly about giving back to the community and loves to share her talent with people. She’s so friendly and approachable, and she teaches this ’signature’ technique on public television. She says that, as a mom of 7 kids, if she can do it, anyone can do it!! And I did! She showed me how to put a blog of paint on my brush and paint a tulip. I really feel like just after a few short lessons that I could actually make beautiful paintings, something I’ve always wanted to do!!! I’m so excited to get started!!!!

I came to CHA to cover the show. In addition, I got encouraged, inspired and hugged a lot and I loved it!! And this is the point…we at Crafty Nation want to be this same kind of champion for all our members. We want to give each other virtual hugs so to speak, and to encourage and empower one another to create beautiful things!

Also, Austin’s influence stayed with me. I couldn’t help myself but flirt with the Crickets at Provo Craft. They were so cute!!

And of course, I was shamelessly self-promoting Crafty Nation every chance I got! This was cut on Pazzle’s machine, which is truly amazing! (And $2450.00!!)Â Â Â Â Â

In addition, we met so many new business people…people who had a dream and brought it into reality. Like Renee Hull, who invented the coolest organizing tool I have seen for scrappers called the “Clip It Up!” - this nifty contraption acts like a rotating storage device very similar to circular clothes racks you see in your favorite department store! You can hang a ton-o-stuff on this baby, and it comes with an upper tier too! COOL! Way to go Renee!!!

I have a ton more to tell you but I have to get to the SUMMER OF LOVE BABY!! Stay tuned for the video blog!!

As promised here’s video from day two of CHA!!

Hey There From CHA Chicago!!

Guys, you would so NOT believe this show, it’s HUGE! We are so excited to be here, and just to see all the people. The place was packed! Big booths, little booths, color everywhere! And talk about crafters paradise!!! It’s a good thing they don’t sell anything at this show, or we wouldn’t be able to make our mortgage!

We had a blast today and saw old friends and made some news ones! We danced and whooped with the Beadalon gang at the 12th annual Camp Hoochee Coochee Social hosted by Toner Plastics & Beadalon. (Jim has some video that, quite frankly, I will have to pay him handsomely to keep under wraps.)

Apart from all the excitement and energy, what I really loved most about today was that I saw so many new small businesses started from creative dreams! We met a few of these today, and I will tell you more about them as the weekend progresses! But for now, just a few shots of the day and a video from the floor of CHA!

Jim & Toni in the press room meeting Veronica Hugger from the National Scrapbooking Association.

Jim earns $2.00 during a session for a shameless self promotion about about Crafty Nation!

Talking to “Crafty Nation” (well really, the camera, but it’s like I can see you all!)

Wish you were here!!

Wine, Nibbles & Needles!

One of the most delightful things I get to do with Crafty Nation is to meet totally fun, hip and interesting people. The ladies at “Gotta Knit” are just completely that!! This small shop is run by two gals, and is truly a sweet place to simply “sit and knit.” They are located in the heart of Greenwich Village, NY and every week they have a social they call “Wine, Nibble’s & Needles.” Tres Fun!!

You may not have heard, but knitting is HOT! There are a million knitting blogs out there (see the ‘link salad’ at the bottom).

I’ve been reading that the actual origins of knitting are hard to trace. Apparently, the earliest evidence of knitted clothing found were fragments of socks that were made in Egypt sometime between 1000 and 1300 A.D. But, even this is disputed since some scholars say that these socks were not knitted but were the result of naalebinding (another fabric making technique). I am sure that God knows the history of knitting, but for us lesser of mind, the “origin of the stitch” remains a mystery.

Where to learn to knit, however, does not. There are SO many classes now, just check your local craigslist and a dozen come up! But if you want personal and in “The Village”, the ladies at Gotta Knit will do more than just teach a person to needle their way into Christmas stockings! And if you’re a glutton for more, Goldie will also design you a pattern, a very numerically intense procedure (I watched her design a sleeve pattern and felt like I was in a math class!) What an intense process. In addition, from all that I’ve heard, it’s a difficult skill to acquire.

Ok, so knitting may not be my thing…but, I am all about community, and that’s what the gal pals at this local shop would try to convince you that this craft is truly centered around. And for absolute sure, there’s something to be said about sitting around with your pals, drinking wine and chatting it up!! No “needles” about it!
